A reprise in Modo of some models I made in Wings 3D.  Very interesting to me to see the differences in approach between the two applications.  I hope other people find this interesting and useful too!

Here is the story.  I am learning Modo and to do so I've been trying (and by and large failing) to convert what I can do in Wings3D to Modo.  So I asked Peter for some clues and he was kind enough to make this video for me showing how he would tackle one of the Wings models I'd been struggling to recreate.  What a nice man!

Yes that's fine with me.  Although I am a bit baffled by all this talk of Llamas and points - I really haven't dug very deeply into this website, I've been remiss in updating my website/blog - it's on the to-do list.  Mostly - I've been recording videos for my youtube channel www.youtube.com/user/davidbrin… which is steadily growing in popularity and also variety (I've begun my first unsteady steps in making videos for lovely Octane) and otherwise I've been picking away at lighting in DS with Horo and with clues and encouragement from forbiddenwhispers.deviantart.c…

After... goodness knows how long I've finally got around to doing something with my website.  So - boringly perhaps - it's going to be a blog.  In which I hope to cover more of the detail behind the video tutorials I make for Bryce and eventually Octane - once I've figured it out some more.  And can get it talking nicely to Bryce.  Slow progress.

This first entry.  I'll try and do something at least once a week.  I'll try...  Is about this tutorial Bryce 7.1 Pro Advanced - Blue glass Stanford Dragon - by David Brinnen oh and a bit of a preamble about making the tutorials in general.

Here's a link to my Blog then Bryce Stanford Dragon and Octane Render

Edit:  New Blog entry for those that want a peek behind the curtain.  Bryce landscapes, lighting, global illumination and special effects.

Comments welcome,

Cheers,

David.
Read what Jim-Zombie has say in his super CG blog DigiSprawl

Here's the link, digisprawl.com/blog/bryce-arti…

And it will save me writing a long winded journal entry!  And you'll get to look at his lovely blog.  It's a win-win.

Cheers,

David.
For the last week I've spent almost every spare moment at the PC passing files back and forth between Bryce and Octane, via Wings3D and DS (neither of which I know half so well as I should, and not nearly half so much as they deserve - I think Bilbo said something like that about his relatives at his eleventyonth birthday... - and I'm still not sure it makes sense, but I like the sound of it).

And... well, it has led me to question just how much the capabilities and limitations of Bryce has influenced what I produce.  Octane has taken the blinkers off somewhat and I've gone back to Bryce and started trying out somethings that I'd avoided because I just thought it wouldn't work - but well, if it works in Octanes Pathfinding - there seems to be a good chance it will work with Bryce's TA... all be it somewhat more slowly.  But speed is all relative.  If I had to paint a picture but hand, I'd spend more time on it than I would a render and I could hardly leave it to paint itself.

I am slightly concerned that I might melt something in my PC, but it's all staying surprisingly cool inside the box in spite of flogging both CPU and GPU 100% side by side.  Of course, the fact that it was 5 degrees centigrade in my room when I got up today (I'm sat here dressed and in my dressing gown and thinking of hot water bottles...) might be helping any cooling issues.

Will Bryce export to Octane?  Hmn... 62% is my reckoning at the moment - with the aid of Wings3D to tidy things up.

Anything mesh - easy, but if you can get it from the source without going through Bryce - that's better, so figures are better plugged in straight from DS - for example.

Terrains - again easy, and it is even possible to get a image of the materials used on it - but the results are not super - at high rez, the geometry output is great, but needs a lot of system memory for Octane to import/convert.  So DTE generated terrains can go straight to Octane.  This opens up some nice potential for creativity.

Bryce primitives - via mesh convert - tricky but doable - mostly.  The resulting material output though on conversion is reduced to utter dribble.

The best thing is, with care, an entire scene can be spat out of Bryce, already composed and fed either whole or peace-meal into Octane, for final rendering.  Then because Bryce is based around CPU and Octane is based around GPU, the two can be handled side by side.  And then what happens?  Interesting things...
For years I've been running the same pair of raptor HD's in Raid 0 arrangement and for the last year (or so) they have been warning me that they are dying.  It's been a slow and remarkably painless death.  The system has frozen and I've rebooted.  The drives have gently complained and of late started to make worrying keening noises and the occasional "clonk" of doom.  My response to this has been to frequently backup data.  And put off the evil moment when I had to replace them, partly because of the expense (I wanted newer bigger raptors) but mostly because of the hell of resetting the system (for some reason it wasn't possible to get a ghost of these drives - the software said yes, but the backup said "What data?  I don't know nothing about no ghost").

So here I am, downloading, installing and rooting through odd scraps of paper to find all my billion digit software keys.  It is a frustratingly tedious process.  It was a sweaty three hours when I didn't think I could remember my email password and so on... with the added irritation that my dyslexia makes the 100% accuracy required for usernames and password entry anything up to a 10 fold process of logging in - when I really can't do it (those boxes that require you to recognize jumbled letters are very bad for me) - I just resort to resetting the password and copy and pasting the answer in.

What have I learned from this experience?  Hmn... raptors are good hard drives, they last a long time.

And I don't like typing in meaningless sequences of numbers and letters - because I'm not very good at it -but I sort of already knew that...

So there you go, that's what I'm doing this week.
Since the topic of the Journal - when last I checked in - a while ago...  Was tutorials.  It seems fitting to mention www.bryce-tutorials.info/ since I've yet, as observed previously, managed to figure out how to add that to my signature.  If such a thing exists.  Nothing mysterious about bryce-tutorials then, the clue is in the name, if you are a Bryce user, in particular a Bryce 7.1 Pro user then there is plenty of information here for you - and very little anywhere else.  The reason being (for the little anywhere else) is this, DAZ have yet to get around to updating the manual - while I've spent hours, if not days, documenting how to use the new features - in the form of 117 or more... yes more in fact... video tutorials.  Also, it might be worth pointing out, if you want to download Bryce 7.1 Pro for free (considering that it was listed at $250 previously so it might be worth doing so even if you don't want to play with it right away) for a limited time, here's another useful link www.bryce-tutorials.info/bryce…
For all those mad keen Brycers out there, a new mini tutorial from Horo and myself, it can now be found on my site www.davidbrinnen.com or his mypage.bluewin.ch/horo/ which can either be viewed in english or german - how clever is that?
My mate at TinyIslandSoftware put this site together www.millionpoundpixelhunt.com/… he doesn't own it, he's a programmer, I'm just plugging it because he's had a run of bad luck and it might be nice if at least one of his projects was getting a bit of interest.  And, what's more, it's hardly got any advertising on it yet, it's cheap and so if you do buy some pixels then you are more likely to find visitors than when it is all filled up.  If you look you might even find an advert by me!  Although being a Yorkshireman and a skinflint, you'll see I've only got 1200 pixels... it's the thought that counts right?
For those who use Wings3D (freely available from www.wings3d.com ) in conjunction with Bryce5.5 (available from www.DAZ3D.com ) you may, or may not, depending on your inclination, the alignment of the planets, what you've eaten for dinner... etc... be interested to know my friend Horo and I have composed another tutorial which can be found on either of our websites.  Here is a link www.davidbrinnen.com and click on free bryce & wings tuts and choose - How to make a building shape for panoramic render to see the new tut.  There are 14 tuts there now so plenty to go at if you find you want to learn something new.
Just got out of hospital.  Barely feel human, brain is still full of muck - my appendix unbeknown to me had rotted away and was quietly poisoning my insides, sometime about noon Sunday my immune system started to loose the battle and I became very ill.  I won't bore you with the details - I've never in my life experainces such revolting and realistic hallucinations - and what seemed to last for hours was only five minutes of "real" time.  A mixture of morphine and poison from my guts.  The opperation was supposed to be straight forwards, but there were complications beacuse of the advanced state of decay of my apendix so it all turned rather nasty.  I have only admiration for the surgical staff of the NHS!
Once again, new mini tutorials for Bryce have been added to my website www.davidbrinnen.com my thanks to Horo for his tireless work on these.  There are also the wings3D tutorials there for anyone who has not yet conteplated this wonderful, fun and free piece of 3D modeling software.

A couple more Bryce tut's have been added to my website www.davidbrinnen.com and one more is on the way, soon...

Once again my thanks to my friend Horo for making sense of my images and techniques.  His website can be found here mypage.bluewin.ch/horo/ click on the do-da on the right hand side if your german is as bad as mine!
Already two of the ten most popular images on my site www.davidbrinnen.com are ones which feature naked ladies...  Now the question is, should I take this as a hint that more people want to look at nude images of digitally rendered women or as a feature of the internet being filled to the brim with sweaty pervs?  Or worse still does it say something "untowards" about myself and my endless fumbling manipulations of poor empty headed Vicki in DAZstudio?  Please don't think I'm being needlessly cruel in saying Vicki is empty headed, I've had the camera inside her skull before now and it really is totally empty...  Perhaps I should make her a brain in Wings3D?  Perhaps you are still wondering what I was doing with a camera inside her?  Perhaps I aught to stop talking... :paranoid:
For those of you with time on your hands and a tendency to break things, even if it is inadvertently, please feel free to test my new Beta Gallery, follow the white rabbit - no - no sorry, take the red pill... no... goto the red box and click on the text within www.davidbrinnen.com  If you find you are in a position to delete the images, please don't just let me know that you are being offered the opportinty so TIS can tighten up the code - it's taken me 11 hours to process and load up 192 images and I'm not in a rush to repeat the experiance!  Thanks, now remember, be good... no hacking!  And enjoy the pics!
