500hrs render time with DOF effects. Built from aprox 50 metaspheres with 5 different materials grouped together to achieve blending of ripple effects. A real headache for my poor old brain and my processor which nearly melted. A mains blip wiped the render out three weeks into the project and I had to mask of 3/4 of the image with a black 2d plane and render the last bit and piece it all back together in PSP7. On the whole, one of the most difficult rendering projects I have undertaken to date. Oh, but it was fun :oP

Thats really something there.. I dont know much about 3D-art, so I'll just say that it looks fine :)

500 hours.. thats quite alot ain't it?
Simply amazing, i rarely see Computer rendered things that look so real.

Cheers, I'm glad you liked it, I mean, unless it is for a competition I generally just do what I want, but it kinda makes it seem more worth while if you have something to show for it at the end. Like I said, three weeks was a killer render, espically with the mains cutting out at the end that was a pain. I'm sure you can imagine I had a few choice words to say in that event. Thanks.
that looks stunning. I've tried to make a water splash myself, but It never worked out. But that is a very cool idea how you put a blck plane over part of the image and render every bit separately. I might try rendering in separate passes next time, so The bits that need radiostiy i'll render separately and then just stick them onto the other pic, witha basic model. in its place to cut don rendering time.

Cutting down on the render time - for the other version of the splash image, which is on my website, I used a distance mask, PSP to alter the greys to give me the point of greatest focus and corelphotopaint to apply the mask with a blur effect and finally photoshop to add a diffuse effect - this cut the render time by a factor of 25 or to put it another way, 480hours of render time saved!
WOW, i have worked on water effects and i enjoy that u achieved the splash (well, i didn't)
Materials are great :D
