Testing Horo's 180 wide angle lens with a vignetting filter. The distortion is not apparent, but that's intention, it should just be enough to make you feel you are looking through a lens. The vignette however is moderately strong.
Rendered with TA obscurer lighting method (see my tutorials) and softened Bryce sun. 3.5 hours render time.
I always thought I'd be able to distinguish a CGI from a real photo ... .. now, that has changed. Took me a very close look to spot that the grass pattern is repeating. Is that grass a 2D floor texture? If so you've merged it perfectly into the scene! The vignetting - is it a decent blur I think to see in the lower image corners?
Thank you! Well, one aim, although not an all consuming one, is to try and produce photo-realistic images. It is a good exercise since it is one with a defined goal that is easier to reach consensus on. If I were to create more surreal or abstract images, it is hard for anyone to know if I have managed to produce the image I intended or have instead been guided by what the render engine will produce for me.
The vignetting is a filter to darken the edges of the image - as I understand it this is a property of real life lenses. Horo set this filter up.
The grass... began life as a photograph taken by Horo, I processed it in Genetica 3.6 to a tile-able texture. Then in Crazy Bump I extracted a selection of maps from it, height, ambient, specular. The height map is used in two ways, one to drive bump and also after processing, to create a heightmap for the terrain onto which the final texture was applied. This gives the grass a "real" 3D presence in the render and makes it respond in a more plausible way to the environmental lighting used. A bit of a fiddly thing to set up, but once made into a tile, it can be reused again easily.

Amazing work!

I really was wondering how the floor could fit so perfectly into the scene environment.
Thank you!
